​@@ianbell5611 Be sure to tell everyone how Lake Macquarie is a truly terrible place to live. Bull sharks and razor clams throughout the Lake. In fact a man was attacked by a bullshark in the Lake only last year. Massive issues with pollution and subsidence from coal mining, asthma issues from the coal burning powerstations, ongoing lead and asbestos contamination from the old smelter at Boolaroo, and continuing residues from the old BHP steelworks. @@TrailerYacht NZ has quite a few trailer sailers on the market. Albeit dated and well used in some cases.

@@druckerman247 Same here in Australia. Most of our TY's were made prior to the big recession here in 1988 - the "recession we had to have" - which destroyed the industry here. But with loving owners our TY's will keep on for many years to come. We are slowly seeing a resurgence of new designs come along here, but Farr Yacht Design seems focused on larger yachts these days.

@@Coolsweat67 - this sounds like a brilliant adventure. Are you in Australia at the moment? There are lots of very cheap & well under-valued trailer yachts (and fixed keeled yachts) around in Australia at the moment. Be careful though, most of our Australian manufacturers stopped producing boats in 1988, and so our boats are all very, very old now. Hi Colin, Thanks for the comment. Do you mean "DeLorean", the black coloured yacht with wings & bowsprit that looks like the lovechild of an 18ft skiff and an X-wing fighter ?? That's a bleeding edge "Square-Top" mainsail - eeking the very last drop of performance from a very high-tech racing machine. You'll see these in the latest America's cup yachts in NZ right now, as well as many catamarans & high performance sports boats. They have a very rigid batten at the top of the mainsail that looks a lot like a gaff. Compare to a modern gaff rig like the Cygnet 19 from Lake Macquarie-based @Bluewater Cruising Yachts - ruclips.net/video/n7b0Zf8jjDo/видео.html . Hope that helps. Cheers, Gavin

Hi Ian, Thank you for your wonderful comments - much appreciated. If you were racing Tasars - I'm guessing you were sailing at Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club or perhaps Teralba Sailing Club? Gavin used to race VJ's at both those clubs (and even Sabots waaaay back) at Marmong Sailing Club back in the 80's. Good times ! Thanks Gavin, 184 from memory was the number. She has a rich race history in Brisbane and huge sentimental value to me, it was sold by ex disgruntled wife and I believe went down to lake Macquarie. Cheers mate

Hi David, Razor clams are a very tasty native species that were always present in low numbers in Lake Macquarie - we just never saw them. The local community was shocked when their population exploded here in the early 2000's as few people knew what they were. The good news is awareness has spread, (thankfully we don't read stories of people receiving bad lacerations anymore) but few seem to know how tasty they are ! Cheers. Gavin & Amanda.

Hi Bill, Thanks for your comment - we are very happy that you like our video. As _Farr_ as we know, the Farr 7500 was only released in New Zealand and Australia, but we would not be surprised if a few unofficially made their way to the Land of the Free & Home of the Brave with émigré owners. Would be extremely rare boats though. Bruce Farr appears to have focused on large keelboats once he moved to the US. The US and Canada are both on our sailing bucket lists, and it would be wonderful to see some sailing videos from your home grounds - please tag us when you upload so we'll be sure to see them. Hi Daniel, Thanks for asking - we were in two minds about whether to include her in the video because of this. Our wonderful Red dog passed away shortly after this video was made. That horrible, puffy lump is a mast cell tumour. It was tiny when we first noticed it - literally the size of half a grain of rice. The vet said she'd leave us within three months - with 90% probability. Unbelievable something so tiny was that deadly. TWO YEARS later, it had finally reached that size, and we wouldn't let her suffer. She was incredibly brave and valiant right to her very last day - too much life to be lived and fun to be had with her humans. We had lost our 16 year old stafford, Walter, only a few months prior, and it was utterly heart breaking. Enough time has passed now, we can talk about it without tears. They both lived every second to the fullest. Cheers, Gavin.

Hi Peter & Patrice, Most insurance companies have a requirement that the standing rigging on your mast be less than ten years old - otherwise there is no coverage. Make sure you keep the receipts from the rigger ! Regardless of what trailer yacht we have owned, we always choose to replace our keel lifting wire/cable every 12 months - two years max, and we always carry a complete spare cable & shackles - they never fail at a good time. Preventative maintenance is essential with all trailer yachts. Not familiar with the tradesmen in your area - join your local trailer yacht club - they'll soon tell you who the good ones are. Your local sail maker is probably also a rigger or works with one & can look at fabricating the standing rigging for you. Keel wire replacement _can_ be done yourself, but too many people get very badly hurt or have very near misses trying to save $200. We choose to pay our local shipwright to lift our Farr 7500, use his commercial stands, pull & inspect both the U bolt and the keel pivot pin, drops the keel out, cleans & sprays it and replaces the keel cable all at the same time. Hi Patrice, Thanks for the lovely comments, and congrats on picking up a Farr 7500 - we are slightly biased >GRIN< but reckon they are the best all-round compromise in a cruising trailer yacht ever built. If it's really getting windy, (and navigation allows), don't be afraid to just sail under working jib alone, or to sail under reefed main alone. If you're thinking about reefing the main, go straight to the 2nd reef, and use your traveller for the mainsheet. Two quick points - how old is your standing rigging and how old is the keel lifting wire? If you're out in strong weather, the last thing you need is for either to give trouble. We were planning on a trip to Fraser Island this year but the "current situation" has postponed it to winter 2021. Cheers, Gavin & Amanda,

Also, there should be some trailer yacht clubs around Morton Bay that would be only too happy to have you join them. Cruising in company is FANTASTIC, especially when you're kicking off. It's extremely reassuring to have more experienced trailer yachties with you when it gets tough - and you'll find the company makes it that much more enjoyable. Bilge Pumps - we have a manual one operable from the helm that picks up under the cockpit (behind the steps). Nice to have but can't beat a frightened man with a bucket !

Trailer Yacht is right. Experiment with jib only or double reef main only when the wind gets up. Small 12v bilge pumps can be installed in the bilge. The water can only enter in certain areas. Know them and where to look if you do get a leak. Great boats.

Hi Carlos, thanks for your comment. If you want to sail regularly offshore, especially in Tassie, the only way to go is a deep keeler. But 99% of people are limited by having to go back to a job, and sail mostly in sheltered waters - we reckon a trailer yacht is the only way to go. Especially if you have a Defender or a Disco as a tow vehicle. I've spent a few months exploring Tassie and barely scratched the surface (the "Taste" was on in Hobart at the time) and would move there in a heartbeat. I have an ambition to visiting the Gordon river and Bathurst channel after watching Episodes 8 & 9 of Surf Sail Roam - check out ruclips.net/video/5Z_v0_P52wU/видео.html. The South Island of NZ has a VERY powerful draw to Amanda & me too.

@@TrailerYacht Thanks for the reply. The TS type boat will be our first, to give sailing a go here. There are so many sheltered bays and hiding spots, I was told you could spend years just roaming these spots even without venturing out to coastal waters. But the idea for us is to buy a larger blue water boat (got a thing for Van De Stadt 34) and then venture out, up to north Queesnsland and NZ too. Again, only after 'treading water'. I am also going to book in to do a Day Skipper course and eventually the Ocean course. I'll be posting up vids of whatever boat we get anyway. Keep up the vids, refreshing to see Australian vids.

​@@rovertasmania7033 - Great to meet another Aussie trailer yacht lover. It's one of those romantic notions, running away to sea. We won't be for a while, but maybe one day. Van de Stadt's are great ! We sold one of the two Aussie made 710 trailer yachts many years ago, and she was definitely in her forte in a blow. @DustInOz76 - Farr 7500 is our choice, and we are not changing boats until we retire from work. Felipe & Juli prefer their RL28, and love her to bits. Don't think they'll be changing either. We hope that answers your question?

@@TrailerYacht it does mate. I'm currently overseas and will return to Oz in a couple of years so have been doing a little homework on my next boat. I had a Sabre 22 however am now oddly enough looking at the Farr 7500 and RL28 as my two most preferred options. The videos are a great help and a little inspiration. Cheers.

We're actually in the middle of shooting a series of videos about the Farr 7500, but it's not likely to be published for a few months, so not sure if this will help. The biggest suggestion regarding what to look for is condition, condition, condition. Make certain that all maintenance claimed by the seller is backed up by RECEIPTS. If they tell you their mechanic/rigger/trailer guy does it cash-in-hand so there's no receipt, that's seller speak for either a tall story or he did it himself after reading about it on some forum.

@@DustInOz76 Additional - I'd suggest asking both current and ex-owners of the boats you have shortlisted for their pro's & cons - that way you'll get both totally biased, and totally unbiased views from people who've actually owned them. BOTH designs are outstanding boats - you won't go wrong with either. Have a chat with Paul Barrowcliff (ruclips.net/channel/UCxDZVyPcLD1f_EAhnSOEIYA) and Felipe - I'm sure they'll tell you all about their RL28's.

@@TrailerYacht thanks mate, can't agree more on your point that condition is the key. My last boat was in very good condition when I purchased her and I sold her for what she cost. Renovator's opportunities are a big risk, plus I haven't got the time to restore a yacht and trailer. My first boat was a cheap entry level Boomerang 20, a great boat to learn with, however I spent far more time fixing the trailer than the boat....

Trailer Yacht And the Farr is a good boat?

@@kymholbrook7495 - We love her - great interior, large pop-top, light mast to raise & lower, swing keel, comfy cockpit & sails beautifully. My family has owned three Farr 7500's now.

Trailer Yacht I have looked at them. I like them because they are beam at the stern an more stable at anchor than others. I am going to investigate further. Cheers Kym

The removable panels are unique to the Farr range of trailer yachts and a great feature - they really boost the ventilation & light when cruising. Hey Dan, This is Croudace Bay ramp. Lake Mac council has spent a few dollars on it now, and its not too bad, especially when its busy i.e. public holidays.

@@TrailerYacht might take my 18ft catamaran down there, that beach looks like a good spot to set up

@@Dan-to9hl - Croudace bay ramp is not too bad for a cat & only a few trees & one street light near the ramp - you'd have to try to hit them. There is another ramp on the southern side of Croudace Bay at Valentine (Hartley Point / Bennett Park depending on the chart you're using) that might be better for an off-the-beach cat because the bottom is a bit softer on the eastern side of the ramp to pull the boat up onto the shore. Watch the trees carefully though. DO NOT USE the one at the Lions Park at Eleebana - it's slippery & has rocks all around the edge of the ramp & the shoreline. It could be done, but there are much better alternatives. My favourite ramp is Paley crescent Belmont South, where my brokerage used to be. I've launched & retrieved Trailer Yachts to the size of Noelex 30's & Binks 30's there, but you need local knowledge to follow the channel in a yacht. In your cat, you should be able to sail In & out over the shallows. Paley Crescent ramp can be used in ANY wind direction & strength, the ramp is steep, the bottom is sand and there are houses all around it so less potential risk for the car & trailer. The major problem is that half of Sydney turns up there in the summer school holidays & some bring attitudes. My wife & I have filmed some remarkable behaviour at this ramp - LOL !

Hi Andrew glad you liked it and THANK YOU for commenting - it really helps us. We often overnight at lovely "Sandy Beach Reserve" just south of Frying Pan Point. We keep our eyes peeled to the weather and have a pretty reliable forecast freely available via the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/hunter.shtml) plus we monitor our VHF on channel 16 for securite bulletins from Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie ( marinerescuelakemacquarie.com.au ) - which is our volunteer coastguard. It's always a judgement call & the main risk is a screaming westerly or southerly. Neither have much fetch at this spot, but they can get _INTENSE_ on the Lake. If we were surprised, we have the shelter of Frying Pan Bay or Sugar Bay within a nautical mile and would be out of harms way in 30 mins or so. Cheers, Gavin

The Sand Island is a really popular spot for trailer yachties and rightly so. The ocean is just around the corner and its so clean with great swimming & fishing too. Because it's so sandy & friendly, I think everyone runs aground there sooner or later. We'll keep an eye out for you - we're often at Sandy beach for the night.

Thanks Colin - we are indeed blessed to live in Lake Macquarie. In this video Felipe & I launched at the Croudace Bay ramp, which is a very good ramp but definitely not my favourite. My wife & I exclusively use the ramp at Paley Crescent, Belmont South for our Farr 7500 as it's steep and very protected, there are no over-hanging trees or powerlines near the ramp (there are powerlines close to the rigging apron though) and most importantly our car & trailer are pretty safe for extended periods as there are houses all around the car park - which _minimises_ risk of malicious activity. There are quite a few good ramps on Lake Macquarie; Lake Rd in Swansea, two in Swansea Channel, Marmong Point (near the marina), Valentine, Rathmines, Styles Point, Coal Point, Wangi Wangi etc, etc, etc. I'll never forget meeting an English couple at our stand at the Sydney International Boat show one year (held annually in August). They dropped into our office about a week later and were utterly apoplectic - the weather was the same as in this video, and they couldn't believe that there was no one out sailing on the Lake midweek. They were Wayfarer and Mirror sailors and would sail all year round in the UK - sailing in DRYSUITS in the English winter. We are so spoilt & soft with our sailing over here ! Cheers, Gavin

Keep an eye out for QE3 - she's based in Port Stephens but you might find her anywhere - Felipe & Juli are out sailing most weekends.
